There is nothing technically illegal about what Jio — and frankly, all major Indian telecom operators — do here. They are not lying. They are not cancelling plans. They are simply arranging the furniture so that the chair you actually want is in the corner, behind a large promotional banner for a chair that costs twice as much.

But it raises a legitimate question for regulators and consumer advocates: if a product is officially active, should consumers have a transparent right to discover it without a treasure hunt?
